When I visited Agnes at her home in Taos in August 2001, she seemed to greatly enjoy the paintings I had just brought back from India. She surprised me by asking, “Do you want to make a swap?” Without hesitation, I said “Yes, of course,” but immediately wondered “Would Pace let you exchange your work?” “No” she replied.
When I next visited Agnes 13 months later on September 20, 2002, my painting was still hanging in the same place on the rear wall of her living room where she sat every day. Agnes said “ I have gotten a great deal out of your painting. I have received great comfort from it.” She remarked that I had been “a wonderful student.” Though I had never been her student, we had enjoyed a passionate exchange about art since 1974. As I was leaving, she said she would be thinking of me and my husband who took this picture.
A few months later Agnes was gone. I created my geometric paintings on silk dedicated to her memory.
